How to check the proper functioning of a TV antenna with a multimeter?

comment tester une antenne tv avec un multimètre

If your television reception is poor, the picture freezes or the sound cuts out intermittently, it may be due to a malfunction of the TV antenna or its coaxial cable. Before calling a technician, it is possible to perform basic checks with a multimeter, a simple and accessible tool to use.

Why check an antenna with a multimeter?

The multimeter allows you to measure electrical continuity, resistance, and identify potential faults in the cable or connectors. In case of failure or unstable reception, these tests can help isolate the problem without dismantling the entire installation.

A damaged cable, a loose socket, or a short circuit between the core and the sheath of the cable can disrupt the signal transmission from the antenna to the television. The multimeter is therefore the ideal tool to determine if the problem comes from the equipment or the signal source.

Steps to test a TV antenna with a multimeter

Before starting, make sure that the antenna is not electrically powered (if it is amplified, unplug the power supply). Here are the steps to follow:

1. Prepare the multimeter

Set the multimeter to the “continuity test” mode (usually represented by a diode or sound wave icon). If your model does not have this, use the Ohmmeter position (Ω), choosing a low scale (200 ohms for example).

2. Test the coaxial cable

Disconnect the antenna cable at both ends.

  • Check the continuity of the central core: place one probe of the multimeter on the central pin of one end and the other on the central pin at the other end. If the multimeter beeps (continuity mode) or displays a value close to 0 ohms, the connection is good.
  • Check the continuity of the metal braid (ground): place one probe on the outer metal part of the connector on one side, and the other on the metal ring of the other end. Same principle: beep or low resistance = continuity ensured.

3. Look for a short circuit

The most important point: ensure there is no contact between the central core and the metal braid.

  • Place one probe on the central pin and the other on the outer ring of the connector at the same end.
  • If there is a beep or a low value, it indicates a short circuit. In this case, you will need to change the cable or check the connectors, as this defect prevents the proper passage of the signal.

Testing an antenna with an integrated amplifier

If your antenna is amplified, the check must be done with caution. Cut off all power before testing. In this case:

  • Perform the same tests as above for the cable.
  • Also check that the power supply is working, by measuring the voltage at the power output (often 5 to 12V depending on the models).

Symptoms of a problem detectable with the multimeter

Here are some signs that may indicate a measurable malfunction:

  • Completely absent signal on the television, despite good antenna orientation.
  • Images that freeze or pixelate at certain times, randomly.
  • Loss of certain channels that were previously accessible.
  • No response from the built-in tuner, even after a channel search.

In these cases, a continuity or short circuit test can reveal a simple defect to correct.
